CDC’s Global Tobacco Surveillance System (GTSS) aims to enhance country capacity to design, implement and evaluate tobacco control interventions, and monitor key articles of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and components of the WHO MPOWER technical package.

CDC provides technical support to Nigeria for tobacco surveillance and has helped establish:

  • Standard survey operating procedures;
  • Questionnaire adaptation;
  • Survey design and sample selection;
  • Data management and processing; and,
  • Training and technical assistance in data analysis and report writing.

Nigeria has completed the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) and Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS). GYTS was conducted in 2000 and 2008 and third-round implementation is planned for 2013. Additionally, Nigeria will participate in a training workshop on GYTS protocol adaptation and implementation process in March 2013. In 2011, Nigeria implemented GATS for the first time. GATS will provide nationally-representative estimates for tobacco use and other key tobacco control indicators. Currently, the country is working on data analysis and preparing the country report.
