Early Infant Diagnosis: Implementation Guides

Early diagnosis of HIV in infants provides a critical opportunity to strengthen follow-up of HIV-exposed children, assure early access to ARV treatment for infected children, provide reassuring information to families of uninfected children, aid evaluation of PMTCT programs, and increase capacity to use laboratory technology. In response to a need for standardized guidance for early infant diagnosis (EID) of HIV, 3 manuals were developed and are available in electronic format or as spiral-bound books.

Book 2: Training Curriculum for Clinical Staff

• Module 1: Review of HIV and PMTCT; Introduction to infant diagnosis of HIV
• Module 2: Follow-up care for HIV-exposed infants and overview of diagnostic testing for HIV in infants
• Module 3: Information and counseling for parents and caregivers of infants being tested for HIV
• Module 4: How to collect, dry, and store dried blood spot samples
• Module 5: Demonstration of skills

A short training film: “The Collection of DBS for early infant diagnosis of HIV” produced by Roche Diagnostics is also freely available and complements the training curriculum for clinical staff.
