Tools for Implementing Tuberculosis Infection-Control Activities in HIV Clinics and Outpatient Settings

The CDC Division of Global HIV/AIDS provides technical support for HIV care and treatment in over 1,300 outpatient HIV/antiretroviral treatment (ART) clinics in resource-limited countries supported by the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). While many PEPFAR-supported countries have developed national tuberculosis (TB) infection control guidelines, there is increasing recognition of the need to support facility-level action. These tools and job aids were developed to address that need. They are based on the World Health Organization Policy on TB Infection Control in Health-Care Facilities, Congregate Settings and Households (2009) and emphasize simple activities that can be performed and monitored at the facility level to begin immediate implementation of TB infection control.

  that allow facilities to identify TB transmission risks and
  potential solutions
• A sample facility infection-control plan and template to guide development and implementation of facility-specific activities
• Slide presentations on TB transmission and pathogenesis, TB treatment and the directly observed therapy, short course (DOTS) strategy, intensified TB case finding, orientation to TB infection control, creating an infection control plan, monitoring and evaluation, and facility design
• A set of job aids, including cough-etiquette posters, patient-educational brochures, team-approach posters (outlining the role of staff members in implementing infection control), and window and door signs to promote natural ventilation
