Tutorial III: Analysis

The third tutorial introduces several useful pieces of analytical GIS functionality with health applications, including network analysis, spatial analysis, and hotspot analysis.

This training is part of a larger curriculum created as part of the GIS Surveillance for Heart Disease, Stroke, and Other Chronic Diseases in State and Local Health Departments project. Learn more about the other GIS Training programs.

Module 1: Network Analyst.

This module introduces and discusses the Network Analyst toolset to perform basic network analysis. The exercises explain how to add network locations, set analysis properties, perform basic service area analyses, and generate an origin-destination matrix/table.

Module 2: Spatial Analyst.

This module discusses the Spatial Analyst toolset, specifically the interpolation and zonal tools, to perform GIS analyses. After completing the exercise, you should be familiar with raster based analyses and the Spatial Analyst toolset.

Module 3: Introduction to Hotspot Analysis

Density can tell you where clusters in your data exist, but not if your clusters are statistically significant. Hotspot analysis uses vectors (not rasters) to identify the locations of statistically significant hot spots and cold spots in data.
