Portions of the LCP Chemicals Superfund Site in Brunswick, Georgia, Are Not Safe for Development

ATLANTA—The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) has released its final public health assessment evaluating whether chemicals in soils at the LCP Chemicals Superfund Site in Brunswick, GA, could affect health.

Located on Ross Road, the LCP Chemicals Site consists of 133 acres of dry land and 680 acres of marsh. Numerous industrial activities took place there since 1919, including an oil refinery, a paint manufacturing company, a power plant, and most recently a chlor-alkali plant. This report focuses on soil contamination that remains in dry-land areas and on seafood collected from the Altamaha Canal.

ATSDR concluded that certain dry-land areas of the LCP Chemicals Site are not safe for residential or business development because mercury, lead, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and dioxins remain in soil at potentially harmful levels. To reduce the risk of mercury and PCB exposure from fish caught and eaten from the Altamaha Canal, ATSDR recommends people follow the state’s fish advisory for the lower Turtle River.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) will hold a community meeting on Sept. 28 to discuss its upcoming public health assessment for the LCP Chemicals Georgia site in Brunswick, Ga. The community meeting allows residents to meet individually with ATSDR representatives. During these meetings staff members explain the purpose of the public health assessment and community members can share their site-related health concerns. The sessions will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and again from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Arco United Methodist Church, 12 Ross Road in Brunswick, Ga.
