ATSDR Seeks Public Comments on LCP Chemicals Superfund Site Health Assessment
Glynn County, Brunswick, Georgia
Wednesday, September 22, 2010
The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) in Atlanta, Georgia has released the public comment version of a public health assessment (PHA) focused on chemicals in soil at the LCP Chemicals Superfund Site (LCP site) in Brunswick, Georgia.
The LCP Site occupies approximately 813 acres immediately northwest of the city of Brunswick. Tidal marshland comprises more than 670 acres of the property. ATSDR’s evaluation of the LCP site focuses on approximately 133 acres of dry land area east of the marsh. In the past, manufacturing operations took place on the dry land area.
ATSDR’s overall conclusion is that if the LCP Site becomes residential, about 30 acres have chemicals in soil that pose a health risk for children and adults. If the site becomes commercial or industrial, about 5 acres have chemicals in soils that pose a health risk for workers.
ATSDR will host a public meeting to talk with community members about the findings in its PHA.
