പോംപി

റോമൻ റിപബ്ലിക്കിന്റെ ജനറലും രാജ്യതന്ത്രജ്ഞനുമായിരുന്നു പോംപി. റോമിലെ ഒരു ധനിക കുടുംബത്തിൽ ബി.സി. 106ലാണ് ജനിച്ചത്. ആഭ്യന്തരയുദ്ധത്തിൽ സുല്ലയുടെ പക്ഷം ചേർന്ന് പോരാടി. സുല്ലയാണ് മഹാൻ എന്ന് വിശേഷണം പോംപിക്ക് നൽകിയത്. അധികം വൈകാതെ സുല്ലയുമായി തെറ്റിപ്പിരിഞ്ഞ പോംപി സ്പെയിനിൽ സുല്ലയുടെ സൈന്യത്തിന് എതിരെ പടനീക്കം നടത്തി. പിന്നീട് പോംപി മിത്രഡെയ്റ്റ്സ് രാജാവിനെ പരാജയപ്പെടുത്തുകയും റോമൻ പ്രവശ്യകൾ വലുതാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇദ്ദേഹം പിന്നീട് ഈജിപ്റ്റുകാരാൽ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടു.
