Respiratory compensation

Respiratory compensation is a mechanism of the respiratory center by which plasma pH can be altered by varying the respiratory rate. It is faster than renal compensation, but has less ability to restore normal values.

In respiratory alkalosis, chemoreceptors sense a deranged acid-base system, and there is increased breathing.[1] The amount of respiratory compensation in metabolic acidosis can be estimated using Winters' formula.

In respiratory acidosis, the breathing rate is decreased.[2]
