Speakers' Biographies
Elizabeth A. Soda, MD
Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer, Respiratory Diseases Branch, Division of Bacterial Diseases, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Dr. Soda is an infectious diseases physician currently serving as an epidemic intelligence service (EIS) officer in the Respiratory Diseases Branch within CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. She completed her infectious diseases fellowship at Stanford, where her area of interest was infections in the immunocompromised host. Following that fellowship, Dr. Soda served as the director of infection control for two years at a California Bay Area hospital. As director, her activities included prevention and response to hospital-associated outbreaks, the reduction of hospital-acquired infections, and the establishment of an antimicrobial stewardship program. She subsequently spent a year in Nicaragua aiding in the establishment of infection control policies at the national pediatric hospital in Managua. Currently, Dr. Soda is working on a variety of domestic and international projects that are primarily focused on Streptococcus pneumoniae and Legionella. She is the lead author of the MMWR’s June Vital Signs article on healthcare-associated Legionnaires’ disease.
Jeffrey S. Duchin, MD
Health Officer and Chief of the Communicable Disease Epidemiology & Immunization Section for Public Health—Seattle and King County
Dr. Duchin is the health officer and chief of the Communicable Disease Epidemiology & Immunization Section for Public Health—Seattle & King County, Washington. He is also a professor of medicine in the Division of Allergy & Infectious Diseases and adjunct professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Washington. Dr. Duchin is a former EIS officer who served in the Respiratory Disease Branch within CDC’s National Center for Infectious Diseases. Dr. Duchin is a member of the National Academies of Science (NAS) Forum on Microbial Threats (and a past member of the NAS Forum on Medical and Public Health Preparedness), the National Quality Forum’s Adult Immunization Committee, and CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. He is the immediate past chair of the Public Health Committee for the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Dr. Duchin’s peer review publications and research interests focus on communicable diseases of public health significance.
John T. Letson, MBA
Vice President of Plant Operations at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City
Mr. Letson is vice president of plant operations at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). He is a facilities operations executive experienced in all aspects of organizational management, compliance, technical engineering, and operations as they apply to infrastructure, construction, and renovations in research and healthcare environments. Mr. Letson started at MSK in 1999 as manager of plant operations and has held multiple positions before being promoted to vice president in 2013. He is now responsible for all plant and facilities operations, as well as MSK skilled trade groups throughout the enterprise. Mr. Letson graduated from the New York Maritime College with a bachelor of engineering in naval architecture and marine engineering. He worked for 17 years for a major oil company’s marine transportation department before spending 5 years in construction and property management. MSK was his first experience in the healthcare field. While at MSK, he earned a master’s degree of business administration from the Hagan School of Business at Iona College. He is a founding member of MSK’s Green Team, leading energy related initiatives and supporting sustainability. Mr. Letson is the author of MSK’s Legionella monitoring, prevention, and control policies, procedures, and plans.
