Speaker Biographies

Arjun Srinivasan, MD

Associate Director for Healthcare Associated Infection Prevention Programs, Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion, CDC

Arjun Srinivasan, MD, is the Associate Director for Healthcare Associated Infection Prevention Programs in the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Srinivasan′s primary responsibilities include oversight and coordination of efforts to eliminate healthcare-associated infections.

Before joining CDC, he served as Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Infectious Diseases Division at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine where he was the founding director of the Johns Hopkins Antibiotic Management Program and the associate hospital epidemiologist.

His research and investigative areas of concentration include outbreak investigations, infection control, multi-drug resistant gram negative pathogens and antimicrobial use. In 2008, he assumed the medical directorship of a new CDC campaign called “Get Smart for Healthcare” which is designed to improve the use of antimicrobials in in-patient healthcare facilities. Dr. Srinivasan has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals on his research in healthcare epidemiology, infection control and antimicrobial use and resistance.

He is a member of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America.

Marion A. Kainer, MD, MPH, FRACP

Director, Hospital Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance Program, Tennessee Department of Health

Dr. Kainer obtained her medical degree and masters of public health in Melbourne, Australia. She is an adult infectious diseases physician and healthcare epidemiologist who has worked as the chief hospital epidemiologist, chair of infection control and antibiotic subcommittees in both academic centers and community hospitals in Australia.

She has 19 years of experience in infection control and hospital epidemiology. She was an Epidemic Intelligence Service [EIS] officer in the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion [DHQP], CDC from 2000-2002. Dr. Kainer joined the Tennessee Department of Health in January 2003 where she is the director of the Healthcare Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance Program. The Tennessee Department of Health has used the National Healthcare Safety Network [NHSN] to support surveillance and prevention activities for healthcare associated infections since 2008.

Dr. Kainer is a member of the advisory council for the Tennessee Center for Patient Safety that currently has three infection prevention collaboratives. Dr. Kainer also is a member of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Prevention [APIC] and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America [SHEA]. She is a member of SHEA’s Public Policy and Governmental Affairs Committee. She is the team lead for healthcare associated infections for the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists [CSTE] and is the CSTE liaison to the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee [HICPAC], a federal advisory group to the CDC and Health and Human Services [HHS] and is the CSTE liaison to the National Healthcare Safety Network [NHSN] steering committee.

Teresa B. Fox, MSEd, MT(ASCP), CIC

HAI Surveillance Program Director, Georgia Department of Community Health, Division of Public Health

Teresa is currently the Healthcare Associated Infections Surveillance Program Director for Georgia Division of Public Health. She received her Bachelors of Science (Biology and Chemistry) from the University of Alabama at Huntsville and her Masters in Education from Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Alabama. She completed her Medical Technology post graduate program at the Holy Name of Jesus School of Medical Technology, Gadsden, Alabama.

Teresa has more than 30 years of acute care experience including microbiology and management. Her infection prevention and control experience has expanded the last decade of her work and she has found it very rewarding and forever changing. She is board-certified in Infection Control and Prevention and Epidemiology (CIC). One of her infection prevention programs received “The Best in Practice” from The Joint Commission. She is an active member of the Association for Professional in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc (APIC) and Georgia Infection Prevention Network (GIPN).
