Surveillance and Outbreaks

Cryptosporidiosis is a nationally notifiable disease. This means that healthcare providers and laboratories that diagnose cases of laboratory-confirmed cryptosporidiosis are required to report those cases to their local or state health departments, which in turn report the cases to CDC.

Outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis affecting multiple people that are related to water and food should be reported to CDC by state health departments. It is important to inform local, state, and federal health authorities about cases of cryptosporidiosis so that appropriate public health responses can be taken to help control the spread of this disease.
