Current Worker Trends

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) regularly gathers data on the workforce and work-related injuries, illnesses, and deaths. Using BLS data, we created selected charts to show recent trends occurring in employment and worker safety and health.  These charts, presented below, are based on a small subset of BLS data. Monitoring the Workforce and Workplace Injuries, Illnesses, and Deaths

BLS monitors the workforce and workplace injuries and illnesses by gathering data through three major surveys:

• Current Population Survey (CPS)is a monthly survey of households conducted by the Bureau of Census for BLS. CPS gathers information on the workforce, employment, unemployment, persons not in the workforce, hours of work, earnings, and other demographic and workforce characteristics.
• Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illness (SOII) is designed to provide annual estimates of the number of work-related injuries and illnesses and the rate at which they occur. These data are collected from private industry, state and local government establishments.
• Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) is an annual survey that reports on deaths related to workplace injuries. These data are collected from private industry, state, local and federal government establishments.
