Surveillance Program Goals

The NIOSH Surveillance Program remains committed long-term to its Strategic and Intermediate Goals.

Strategic Goal 1: Enhance national surveillance systems to prevent occupational illnesses, injuries, and hazards.

Intermediate goal 1.1: Expand national surveillance of occupational injuries and illnesses to identify gaps, trends, priorities and associated burden.

Intermediate goal 1.2: Disseminate national occupational health surveillance information and provide access to data.

Intermediate goal 1.3: Expand national surveillance of occupational hazards, exposures, and risk factors to identify gaps, trends, and priorities.

Intermediate goal 1.4: Encourage the inclusion in information systems of standardized codes and narrative information on work- relatedness, occupation, industry, and circumstances of injury or disease.

Intermediate goal 1.5: Measure the national economic burden of occupational injuries and illnesses.

Intermediate goal 1.6: Promote, support and measure the impact of national intervention activities to address problems identified through surveillance.

Strategic Goal 2: Enhance state-based surveillance systems and use of data at both the State and national levels to prevent occupational illnesses, injuries, and hazards.
