Aviation Safety Research Goals

The NIOSH Aviation Safety Research Program operates as part of the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) which is a partnership program designed to stimulate innovative research and improved workplace practices. NORA was unveiled in 1996; we are currently entering the third decade (2016-2026) of NORA with an enhanced structure. It now consists of ten industry sectors based on major areas of the U.S. economy, and seven health and safety cross-sectors organized according to the major health and safety issues affecting the U.S. working population.

Each sector has a council which develops and maintains an agenda for its sector; the NIOSH Aviation Safety Research Program is part of the Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities sector. Diverse parties come together in the councils and identify critical issues in workplace safety and health and create agendas. Partners then develop broad strategic objectives for research based on the needs listed in the agendas. Councils accomplish objectives through information sharing, partnerships, and enhancing dissemination and implementation of evidence-based practices. The agenda for the third decade are forthcoming, this site will be updated as the agenda for the Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities sector is developed.
