Issue Date: December 23, 2013

From: Roland Berry Ann, Acting Chief, Technology Evaluation Branch, National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory

Subject: Voluntary Rescission of Approval number TC-13F-0239 (CSE SR-100 Self-Contained, Self-Rescuer)

The certificate of approval for the CSE Corporation (CSE) SR-100 escape respirator, also known as a Self-Contained, Self-Rescuer (SCSR) in mining applications, was issued jointly by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The device was approved as a one-hour SCSR on February 23, 1989, under approval number TC-13F-0239.

On April 26, 2012, NIOSH published a

User Notice and MSHA published a Program Information Bulletin (PIB 12-09) indicating that all units should be removed from mining service by December 31, 2013. MSHA issued Procedure Instruction Letter (PIL) No. I12-V-18 on July 26, 2012. PIL I12-V-18 advises MSHA enforcement of the 12/31/13 deadline for all remaining units.

CSE has requested that the approval for the SR-100 be rescinded effective December 31, 2013. This user notice serves as official notification that as of January 1, 2014, the SR-100 will no longer be a NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator.

Questions regarding the current enforcement status of SR-100s should be directed to the appropriate enforcement agency, either MSHA or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). All users are advised to seek replacement respirators as soon as possible and to withdraw any remaining SR-100s from service.
