B. Lifetime Scientific Achievement Award for 2013:

This year, NIOSH is proud to nominate Dr. Al Munson for the Charles C. Shepard Lifetime Scientific Achievement Award. Since joining NIOSH in 1997 to build a new laboratory-based occupational health research division at NIOSH, Dr. Munson's leadership and scientific contributions have significantly enhanced the breadth and quality of science at NIOSH, bringing national and international recognition to NIOSH. Dr. Munson's extraordinary leadership in creating a multidisciplinary approach, and his dedication to quality of science, by the recruitment of top scientists and establishment of rigorous peer review laid the foundations for HELD's scientific success. This success is evidenced by the reputation of HELD scientists throughout the national and international community. Nomination for this prestigious award recognizes not only Dr. Munson's outstanding contribution to occupational safety and health, but also his dedication and commitment to the NIOSH mission.

NIOSH also nominated Dr. Richard W. Niemeier for the 2009 Charles C. Shepard Lifetime Scientific Achievement Award to recognize his distinguished service to NIOSH over four decades. Dr. Niemeier is one of the world's leading experts on the toxic effects of chemicals. He has made important contributions to public health through both his laboratory-based research on chemical carcinogens and his guidance for preventing chemical exposures in the workplace and for emergency personnel responding to chemical incidents or terrorist events. Dr. Castranova is chief of the Pathology and Physiology Research Branch in NIOSH's Health Effects Laboratory Division. Dr. Castranova has dedicated 30 years of distinguished service to NIOSH. B. Lifetime Scientific Achievement

NIOSH nominated Lewis V. Wade, Ph.D., for the lifetime scientific achievement award to recognize his distinguished 30-year career of scientific research, application, and leadership in occupational safety and health. Dr. Wade currently serves as the Senior Science Advisor to the Office of the Director. During his career with NIOSH, Dr. Wade has improved the safety and health of mine workers, assumed key roles of scientific leadership, and helped to guide research at the Pittsburgh and Spokane Research Laboratories. He has been awarded two Presidential Rank Awards for Meritorious Service with the Senior Executive Service and a Presidential Design Award for the Mine Roof Simulator. In 2006 he received the Donald S. Kingery Memorial Award for his career contributions to mining safety and health.

The Pocket Guide is a vital source of general chemical hazard and control information for workers, employers, and occupational health professionals. It could be found in the pockets of rescuers at the World Trade Center, and is presently found in corporate offices, industrial plants, construction sites, and schools of public health.

C. Lifetime Scientific Achievement

NIOSH is nominating Marilyn A. Fingerhut, Ph.D. for the Lifetime Scientific Achievement Award to recognize her outstanding career of scholarship and leadership in preventing occupational disease, injury, and death among workers. During Dr. Fingerhut's 20 year career, she has conducted innovative and ground breaking research on dioxin, established herself as a champion and expert for occupational women's health issues, and has moved forward global occupational health risk assessment. She was instrumental in the development of the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA), the first agenda of its kind, and galvanized the global occupational health community's Occupational Centers while detailed to the World Health Organization (WHO). Her professional work is recognized nationally and internationally.
