Guided Exhibit Tours FAQ

All guided exhibit tours are led by CDC professionals who volunteer in the museum OR professional museum staff. Tours visits are approximately two hours and consist of:

• An introduction to CDC’s work using the Global Symphony, a multimedia installation
• Introduction and short self-guided tour of the current temporary exhibit
• Guided tour of several stops in CDC Museum’s The Story of CDC permanent exhibit
• BSL 4 lab suits to try on
• If your group’s time allows: additional time exploring CDC museum.

What will your students learn?

The CDC Museum teaches public health, specifically as it relates to CDC’s work. Secondary topics may vary based on which docent is available for your tour. These topics may include microbiology, infectious disease, environmental health, CDC history, or even the art in our exhibits.

Where does the tour go? All guided tours of the CDC Museum exhibits include an introduction using the short stories on the multimedia show, an introduction to the current temporary exhibit, and a tour of the permanent exhibit, The Story of CDC. The tour of The Story of CDC will include CDC’s origins, and 3-4 other stops based on the docent’s experience.

Can I request a specific docent?

If you wish to request a specific docent, please make note in the “About the Group” section of the tour request form, but keep in mind that your preferred docent may not be available.

Can I request specific topics or stops in the exhibits?

Each docent has crafted a unique tour based on his or her experience and knowledge. You can, however, help us find you a docent that best matches your group by providing a detailed description of your group when you complete the online tour request form.

Will we see a lab during our tour?

No. CDC is a working government facility and tours of campuses or labs are not offered.

Self-Guided Visits FAQ

All self-guided visits will have access to all parts of CDC Museum which can be explored at your own pace. The CDC Museum offers:

• Current temporary exhibit
• The Story of CDC, the permanent exhibit
• BSL 4 lab suits to try on
