Data Surveillance Systems
Data on topics related to mental health and substance abuse are available from surveillance systems either sponsored or conducted by CDC. A brief description of each system is listed below.

Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network (ADDM)
The ADDM Network provides data on the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) and other developmental disabilities in different communities in United States.
Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)
BRFSS collects information on health risk behaviors, preventative practices, and access. Questions include alcohol and tobacco use; "recent mentally unhealthy days"; anxiety and depressive disorders; and -psychological distress.
National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)
NHANES assesses health and nutritional status through interviews and physical examinations. Collected data covers conditions, symptoms, and concerns associated with mental health and substance abuse, and mental health service use and need.
National Health Interview Survey (NHIS)
NHIS collects data on children’s mental health and mental disorders, such as ADHD, Autism, depression and anxiety problems, and mental health service use and needs.
National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS)
NHAMCS collects data on the utilization and provision of ambulatory care services, including mental health. Data covers physicians' diagnoses, services and procedures, types of health care professionals seen, and hospital characteristics.
National Hospital Discharge Survey (NHDS)
NHDS, a probability survey of inpatients discharged from nonfederal short-stay hospitals, includes data on discharge diagnoses and surgical and diagnostic procedures.
National Nursing Home Survey (NNHS)
NNHS, a series of surveys, includes data on behavioral problems, depressed mood, medications, admitting and current diagnosis, and assignment to specialty unit.
National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH)
NSCH examines the health of children with emphasis on well-being, including medical homes, family interactions, parental health, school and after-school experiences, and safe neighborhoods.
National Survey of Children with Special Healthcare Needs (NS-CSHCN)
NS-CSHCN explores medical homes, adequate health insurance, and access to needed services for children with special health care needs . Data covers emotional, behavioral, and mental disorders, and mental health service use and needs.
National Violent Death Reporting System
The NVDRS collects data from medical examiners, coroners, police, crime labs, and death certificates to understand the circumstances surrounding violent deaths, including suicide.
National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS)
NYTS is a nationally representative school-based survey on tobacco use by public school students enrolled in grades 6-12. .
Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS)
PRAMS collects data on maternal attitudes and experiences before, during, and after pregnancy. Surveillance research includes prevalence of self-reported postpartum depression and anxiety symptoms.
School Associated Violent Death Study (SAVD)
SAVD plays an important role in monitoring trends related to school-associated violent deaths (including suicide), identifying risk factors, and assessing the effects of prevention efforts.
School Health Policies and Programs Study (SHPPS)
SHPPS is a national survey assessing school health policies and practices at the state, district, school, and classroom levels. Collected data includes mental health and social service policies.
WISQARS
Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System (WISQARS) is an interactive database system that provides customized reports of injury-related data.
Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS)
The YRBSS monitors health-risk behaviors including tobacco use, substance abuse, unintentional injuries and violence, sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy and STDs.
