Application Information

To be eligible for the CDC-Hubert Global Health Fellowship, you must be:

  • A 3rd or 4th year medical or veterinary student during the fellowship
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Enrolled in a school accredited by one of the following:
    • Liaison Committee on Medical Education
    • American Osteopathic Association
    • American Veterinary Medical Association
  • Covered by medical insurance during the fellowship
  • Able to attend the 2-day course in July at CDC, in Atlanta, Georgia

Step 1:  Prepare your application

  • Review eligibility.
  • Update your CV.
  • Write your personal statement by answering these questions:
    • Why do you want to be a Hubert Fellow?
    • What do you hope to gain from the fellowship experience?
    • What are your unique qualifications and related experiences for a global health fellowship?
    • What are your career goals, and how would your participation in a global health fellowship enhance them?
  • Obtain a signed Academic Endorsement [PDF - 1 page] from the student affairs office at your medical or veterinary school.
  • Provide your two recommendation writers with the Instructions for Letters of Recommendation [PDF - 2 pages] .
  • Review the list of 2017-2018 Field Assignments [PDF - 14 pages].
    • On your application, you will be asked to rank up to five field assignments. Please only rank the assignments you are willing to participate in. Carefully review dates and assignment location.
    • Your stipend for all field assignment costs will be $4,000. You will be responsible for any costs over $4,000.

Step 2:  Submit your application by the deadline

  • Complete the online application
    • You will be prompted to enter your personal statement and your CV into appropriate sections of the online application form.
    • You may complete the online application before or at the same time as uploading required application materials. Be sure to save your application if doing these steps separately.
  • Upload your signed Academic Endorsement file in the online application forum.
  • Enter email addresses for 2 people who will write letters of recommendation.
  • Confirm that your recommendation writers have submitted your letters by the deadline.
  • Submit your application after completing the online application and uploading all required materials.

*You will not be able to make changes after submitting your application.

The following application materials should be uploaded as attachments to your online application by the application deadline.

Letters of Recommendation

  • Two letters of recommendation are required.
  • Select individuals who know you professionally and with whom you have recently worked.
  • At least 1 letter must be from a supervisor or faculty member of your school.
  • Provide recommendation writers with a copy of the Instructions for Letters of Recommendation [PDF - 2 pages] .

Academic Endorsement

  • Download the Academic Endorsement [PDF - 1 page] .
  • Have the form completed and signed by the student affairs office at your medical or veterinary school.
  • Upload to the CDC-Hubert Global Health Fellowship online application by the deadline.

Phase 1: At your School. Complete pre-requisites while attending school.

  • Complete assignments and readings related to field assignment.
  • Communicate regularly with supervisor.
  • Complete online training.
  • Attend a 2-day course in July in Atlanta, Georgia.
    • Activities include didactic sessions, group discussions, and interactive case studies.

Phase 2: In the Field.  Perform duties in the field for 6-12 weeks, as assigned.

  • Travel to field assignment in a developing country.
  • Conduct field work under the mentorship of an assigned supervisor.
  • Complete a mid-project report.

Phase 3: At Your School. Complete post-field assignment activities after returning to school.

  • Complete a final report (scientific manuscript)*.
  • Complete an evaluation*.

*The final report and completed evaluation are due 30 days from the field assignment end date.

January 30, 2017 Application period opens
February 17, 2017 Application deadline for submitting online application and uploading all materials (11:59 pm., ET).
April 21, 2017 Selected applicants notified of acceptance and assignments.
July 1, 2017 Fellowship begins. Fellows complete prerequisites (at school) prior to their field assignment.

July 24-25, 2017 CDC-Hubert Global Fellowship 2-day course at CDC in Atlanta, GA
September 1, 2017* 6-12 week field assignment. Fellows complete in-the-field activities. Then, fellows complete post-field assignment activities within 30 days of returning.

June 30, 2018 Fellowship ends

*Field assignments may occur any time between September 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018. The final report and completed evaluation are due 30 days from the field assignment ending date.
