Make a Difference in Global Health
“This experience reinforced the need to think about health as interconnected in every day patient care. Physicians must be aware of emerging diseases in order to provide the best care, regardless of where the patient is from. I will try to stay informed of emerging diseases, new therapies and ways to prevent transmission while treating my patients. I will also look for more opportunities to contribute to global health locally and abroad. I think my ability to review patient’s charts has greatly improved and I will be using this skill in every day practice.”

Expand Cultural Awareness
“I learned a lot about research design and the multiple players to consider when designing a research protocol, as well as considerations for protocol implementation, capacity-building and sustainability. I hope to do a global health research project during residency and continue working in global health capacity-building beyond residency, so my experience in Uganda will be invaluable in influencing my success with future global health projects in Africa or other developing nations.”

“In my future career, I plan to continually keep in mind the public health implications of the day-to-day interactions I have with patients and other physicians. This fellowship helped give me a broader picture view of maternal and child healthcare, and introduced me to the important concept of event reporting for maternal and perinatal mortality. I plan to apply these principles in my future clinical career and also plan to be a physician who is very much engaged in public health work.”

“The CDC-Hubert Fellowship gave me the opportunity to work side-by-side with local professionals in the national offices and health facilities all over the country. We established shared goals, good working relationships, and ultimately friendships, in a truly mutually beneficial partnership.
