International Day of the Girl
Every year, an astonishing 380,000 adolescent girls and young women are infected with HIV. That’s more than 1,000 every day.
Consider sub-Saharan Africa, where 1 in 4 new HIV infections occurs among young women and girls.
In the hardest hit countries, girls account for more than 80% of all new HIV infections among adolescents.
AIDS is the leading cause of death for girls aged 15-19 in eastern and southern Africa.
