HIV/AIDS Assets and Strategic Focus

Strategic Focus
Senegal has a concentrated HIV epidemic with high prevalence rates in most-at-risk groups (i.e., commercial sex workers) but low levels in the general population. CDC provides support for the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) and the government surveillance program to strengthen laboratory systems and to develop reliable data on HIV transmission within Senegal.

Strengthening Surveillance and Health Information Systems
CDC provides technical and financial support for sustaining Senegal’s HIV/AIDS strategic information activities through assistance with Senegal’s 2011 National HIV Sentinel Surveillance Survey. The survey is administered in antenatal clinics, and its measurements of HIV and syphilis prevalence will inform national policymaking and programming in HIV/AIDS and overall health.

Strengthening Laboratory Systems Throughout Africa
In partnership with Senegal’s Cheik Anta Diop University, CDC improves the quality of laboratory services in Francophone African countries by strengthening indigenous capacity to implement basic quality management systems and by developing an HIV-related proficiency testing system that is available to all African countries.

Notable Accomplishments

Surveillance and Monitoring

With CDC technical and financial support, Senegal is in the process of conducting its 2011 antenatal care survey to measure HIV prevalence among pregnant women.

Cooperative Agreement Awarded

CDC has established a cooperative agreement with the Senegal’s HIV surveillance coordinating program at the NRL which is located at the Dantec Hospital in Dakar, Senegal. The cooperative agreement will strengthen HIV strategic information in Senegal through the design and implementation of a national HIV case reporting system and other surveillance activities in support of the National Strategic Information Program.
