Water Operators & Engineers

CDC offers a variety of resources, programs, and training for water operators and engineers, including in-person training focused on water fluoridation. If you are interested in finding out more about this program, contact oralhealth@cdc.gov.

Water Fluoridation Training Program

Image of CD cover CDC provides a training on the Principles and Practice of Water Fluoridation. This training is designed to build the capability of state fluoridation programs and to help water program staff and public health professionals increase their knowledge and refine their skills related to community water fluoridation. In addition, CDC provides a half-day course to prepare program staff to use the Water Fluoridation Reporting System (WFRS).

Water Fluoridation Reporting System (WFRS)

Water Fluoridation Reporting System (WFRS) logo WFRS helps states manage the quality of their water fluoridation programs. This system is also used to develop state and national health statistics that describe the percentage of the U.S. population on community water systems receiving optimally fluoridated drinking water. WFRS was developed by the CDC in partnership with the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors.

Technical Assistance to State Programs

CDC provides technical assistance to state programs regarding engineering support, facility management, and operational support. CDC serves as a resource on community water fluoridation to other federal government agencies, state programs, and professional organizations and associations. For assistance, please contact oralhealth@cdc.gov.

Recommendations for Fluoridation

Engineering and Administrative Recommendations for Water Fluoridation, 1995. MMWR, September 29, 1995;44(RR–13):1–40 [PDF–338KB] provides specific recommendations for water fluoridation, including administration, monitoring and surveillance, technical requirements, and safety procedures for community public water supply systems.

Awards for Outstanding Fluoridation Efforts

Each year, CDC recognizes water systems that achieve optimal fluoridation levels for all 12 months with its annual Quality Award. You must be in a state that uses the Water Fluoridation Reporting System to qualify.
