Pathways to Related Careers

In Session 2, we commented on the common assumption that CHW positions exist primarily as a springboard or stepping stone to “higher” professional careers.

However, if the CHW is to be respected as an occupation, an individual’s choice to pursue a career as a CHW must be respected. Stakeholders should be careful not to create status distinctions between CHWs bound for other careers and those who wish to remain as CHWs.

If this option is to be meaningful for CHWs, supports must be offered to assure their success. It can be a big leap for some CHWs to “move up.”
