Calculating CE

Continuing education (CE) is calculated based on the number of minutes for instruction, accrediting organizations calculate CE differently. Non-instructional portions of an activity are not considered learning time and, therefore, are not added to instructional minutes. Contact your CE consultant if you have questions about calculating CE.

AAVSB RACE (American Association of Veterinary State Boards Registry of Approved Continuing Education)

CE credit for a program segment may be calculated by dividing the total minutes of actual contact time by 50, rounding down to the nearest ½ CE credit.

The smallest increment considered for approval is ½ hour. Not all boards will accept increments smaller than 1 whole hour, even if RACE credit has been approved.

Continuing Education Contact Hours (CECH) for Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES)

1 contact hour is based on 60 minutes of instruction. EFFECTIVE 9/22/2017. The minimal number of CECH is 0.5 (30 minutes) for any type of program.

CECH is calculated by rounding up to the nearest ½ hour.

30 minutes = 0.5 hours
45 minutes = 1 hour
1 hour and 45 minutes = 2 hours
2 hours and 10 minutes = 2 hours
2 hours and 15 minutes = 2½ hours
2 hours and 35 minutes = 2½ hours

Continuing Education Units(CEU)

0.1 CEU is based on 60 minutes of instruction. CEUs are expressed in tenths. The CEU is defined as 10 contact hours in an organized continuing education activity. The minimum number of CEUs awarded is 0.1.

• Add the minutes for all allowable activities in a learning event.
• Divide the total by 60.
• Divide this total by 10.
• Round the fraction for the last few minutes to the nearest tenth.
• If the resulting calculation ends in less than .5, round down to 0.

If the resulting calculation ends in .5 or higher, round up to the nearest whole number.

30 minutes = 0.1 CEU
1 hour plus 20 minutes = 0.1 CEU
2 hours and 30 minutes = 0.3 CEUs
2 hours and 40 minutes = 0.3 CEUs

Continuing Medical Education(CME)

1 contact hour is based on 60 minutes of instruction. Round to the nearest quarter hour. The minimum number of credits awarded is 0.25. One hour of instruction plus a portion is awarded as follows:

15 minutes = 0.25 hours
30 minutes = 0.5 hours
1 hour plus 1–15 minutes = 1.25 hours
1 hour plus 16–30 minutes = 1.5 hours
1 hour plus 31–45 minutes = 1.75 hours
1 hour plus 46–60 minutes = 2 hours

Continuing Nursing Education(CNE)

1 contact hour is based on 60 minutes of instruction. The minimum number of contact hours awarded is 0.25.

Contact hours may be awarded in increments of tenths, for example, 2.1. All computations must be rounded down.

15 minutes = 0.25 hours
30 minutes = 0.5 hours

CPE (Continuing Pharmacy Education)

1 contact hour is based on 60 minutes of instruction. The minimum number of CEUs awarded is 0.025. Thirty minutes is 0.05.

1 contact hour = 0.1 continuing education unit (CEU)

This is the minimum unit of credit to be awarded for any single pharmacy education program. The CEU (continuing education unit) is defined as 10 contact hours in an organized continuing pharmacy education activity.
