CDC Participants
Active Bacterial Core surveillance (ABCs) activities, including data collection, management, and principal analyses, result from collaboration among three groups at CDC: the Division of Bacterial Diseases’ Respiratory Diseases Branch, Meningitis and Vaccine Preventable Diseases Branch, and Biostatistics Office. Pathogen-specific analyses are undertaken by personnel in each branch as outlined below.
Respiratory Diseases Branch
The Respiratory Diseases Branch is responsible for designing and conducting epidemiologic studies, isolate tracking, and additional laboratory characterization of the following ABCs organisms: group A Streptococcus, group B Streptococcus, Legionella, and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
Meningitis and Vaccine Preventable Diseases Branch
The Meningitis and Vaccine Preventable Diseases Branch is responsible for designing and conducting epidemiologic studies, isolate tracking, and additional laboratory characterization of the following organisms: Bordetella pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae, and Neisseria meningitidis.
Biostatistics Office
The Biostatistics Office provides statistical expertise for disease outbreak investigations, research studies, and surveillance data analyses. The office is responsible for adapting existing analytical methodology and developing new techniques for statistical applications.
