Health Education

	Health Education

Educating people about potential health problems caused by exposure to lead and other metals in soil is an important soilSHOP activity. Health educators talk to soilSHOP participants one-on-one about the following:

  • Results of the participants’ soil screening,
  • Health problems that could be caused by exposure to high levels of lead, and
  • Tips to lower exposure to lead in soil.

Also, health educators can:

  • Review and design soilSHOP and other health education materials so that they meet the specific needs and concerns of the community, and
  • Complete the soilSHOP Internal Consultation Evaluation Form after each one-on-one discussion to record outreach efforts.

Toolkit Resources for Health Education

Example Resources Sheet for Further Information [DOC - 37KB]

Health education is a primary purpose of the soilSHOP event. The Example Resources Sheet for Further Information.docx is a tool for providing additional educational materials and resources for participants to seek out on their own following the soilSHOP event.  Personalize this tool by adding local resources that may be useful to members of the community surrounding your soilSHOP. Resources may include links to local health clinics and garden groups, county health department publications, and/or federal programs supporting lead-healthy soils. Once updated to be specific to your soilSHOP event and location, these sheets can be printed and handed out to participants at the soilSHOP event.

It helpful for the soilSHOP planning team to begin drafting the resources sheet early in the planning process, and to ask for input on the list from local and regional partners. Consider printing many of these for distribution on your event day – you may hand out this sheet to passersby who didn’t even come with a soil sample!

soilSHOP (Internal) Evaluation Tool [DOC - 33KB]

The soilSHOP Internal Evaluation Form.docx is a tracking tool to help soilSHOP planners evaluate the planning and implementation process of an event, and how many individual interactions and health education consultations were completed at the soilSHOP.  At the soilSHOP, this form can be completed by a health educator and other staff after each health education consultation with a soilSHOP participant, or interaction with an event passerby. This form can be prepared in the weeks leading up to your event, and printed in sufficient copies so that there will be one form for each anticipated soil sample.
