Agencia Federal Solicita Comentarios Adicionales del Público en Reporte sobre el Pozo de Corozal

ATLANTA – La salud de las personas que usan el agua del pozo de Corozal no está a riesgo, dice la Agencia para Sustancias Tóxicas y el Registro de Enfermedades (ATSDR por sus siglas en inglés) en su Evaluación de Salud Pública. El público está invitado a leer y proveer comentarios nuevamente en el reporte sobre el Pozo de Corozal.

La ATSDR preparó la Evaluación de Salud Pública para determinar si los niveles de compuestos orgánicos volátiles (COVs) en el pozo podrían causar daño a los residentes de la comunidad. La ATSDR publicó este reporte por primera vez para recibir comentarios del público en mayo del 2014. El informe re-publicado incluye datos actualizados y las conclusiones permanecen igual.

El pozo suple agua potable a aproximadamente 240 personas en Corozal y Naranjito.

La Evaluación de Salud Pública encontró que:

  • Las exposiciones pasadas a los COVs por beber o usar el agua del pozo estuvieron por debajo de los niveles que pudieran causar daño a la salud. Debido a la falta de datos anteriores al 2010, la ATSDR estimó exposiciones pasadas para tetracloroetileno (PCE) en el agua del pozo usando los niveles actuales de contaminante recopilados desde el 2010. Las concentraciones de contaminantes pueden cambiar a medida que pasa el tiempo, de modo que los niveles desde el 2010 podrían ser no representativos del periodo bajo análisis y por tanto subestimar o sobrestimar las exposiciones.
  • Es poco probable que algún contacto ocasional con el agua superficial pueda causar daño a las personas.
  • Actualmente, el agua del pozo que llega a los hogares pasa por un proceso de filtración que elimina la exposición a COVs.
