പാലിയോപ്റ്റെറ
ചിറകുള്ള പ്രാണികളിൽ അവ മടക്കി ഉടലിനോടു ചേർത്തുവെക്കാൻ കഴിവില്ലാത്ത പ്രാണികളെയാണ് പാലിയോപ്റ്റെറ (Palaeoptera) എന്ന ഉപവിഭാഗത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഈ ഉപവിഭാഗത്തിലുള്ള തുമ്പികൾ, മെയ് ഫ്ലൈകൾ എന്നിവയ്ക്ക് ഗന്ധം അറിയാനുള്ള മസ്തിഷ്ക്ക ഭാഗമില്ല. എങ്കിലും അവയ്ക്കു ശൃംഗികകൾ വഴി ഗന്ധം മനസ്സിലാക്കാനാകും[2]
