കാട്ടുവേലിത്തത്ത

വേലിത്തത്ത വിഭാഗത്തിൽ പെട്ടതും കേരളത്തിലെ കാടുകളിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്നതുമായ ചെറിയ ഇനം പക്ഷിയാണ്‌ കാട്ടുവേലിത്തത്ത. ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്: Blue-bearded Bee-eater ശാസ്ത്രീയനാമം: Nyctyornis athertoni. മൈനയോളം വലിപ്പമുള്ള ഈ പക്ഷിയെ കാട്ടുപ്രദേശങ്ങളില് മാത്രമേ കാണാറുള്ളൂ. ഒരു കാലത്തും വാലിൽ കമ്പിത്തൂവലുകൾ ഇല്ല.

ഇവയുടെ കാൽ വളരെ കുറിയതും കമ്പികളിലും ചുള്ളികളിലും മാത്രം പിടിച്ചിരിക്കാൻ സഹായിക്കുന്നവയാകയാൽ നിലത്തിറങ്ങാതെ എപ്പോഴും വേലികളിലും ഇലയില്ലാത്ത മരച്ചില്ലകളിലും മാത്രമേ കാണാറുള്ളൂ. അതിനാലാണ്‌ വേലിത്തത്ത എന്ന പേര് ഈ വർഗ്ഗത്തിൻ ലഭിച്ചത്. കാടുകളിലാണ് ഇത് കൂടുതലായും വസിക്കുന്നത് എന്നതിനാൽ കാട്ടുവേലിത്തത്ത എന്ന പേരും കൈവന്നു.
