History

he Emergency Medicine Residency Program at UC San Diego Medical Center began in 1990 with four residents. We now recruit for nine residents per year for a four-year period and total of 36 residents.

The residency is directed towards producing future academicians in Emergency Medicine and, as such, places a heavy emphasis on academic pursuits. All trainees must complete and write up an independent research project, prepare a select numbers of abstracts from the literature, and participate as an editor of the Journal of Emergency Medicine, which is based at UC San Diego.
