Diazoxide

Background

  • Non-diuretic thiazide, arterial vasodilator
  • Used to treat severe hypertension
  • Reflex response leads to tachycardia and increased cardiac output

Contraindications

  • Aortic stenosis
  • Aortic coarctation
  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Dosing

  • 1-3 mg/kg IV (maximum 150 mg)

Adverse Effects

  • Hypotension
  • Fluid retention after prolonged use
  • Hyperglycemia

Interactions

  • May potentiate warfarin's anticoagulant effects

Pregnancy

  • Class C
  • Has caused skeletal, cardiac, and pancreatic abnormalities in animals
