Administration

  • Type: Topical steroid
  • Dosage Forms: cream, emollient, foam, gel, lotion, ointment, spray, shampoo
  • Routes of Administration: topical
  • Common Trade Names: Olux, Temovate, Clobex, Cormax

Adult Dosing

  • Most indications: apply to affected area of skin BID, max 50g/week
  • Genital lichen sclerosus: apply to vulva once daily
  • Scalp psoriasis: apply shampoo to affected areas dry scalp once daily; leave in place 15 minutes before lathering and rinsing. Max 50ml/week x 2 weeks

Pediatric Dosing

Safety/efficacy not established in children <12yo

Special Populations

Contraindications

  • Allergy to class/drug
  • Primary scalp infection

Adverse Reactions

Serious

  • Secondary hypocortisolism (higher risk in pediatrics)
  • Intracranial hypertension

Common

  • Skin atrophy, asteatotic eczema
  • Skin irritation, burning, discomfort, dryness
  • Pruritus
  • Telangiectasia
  • Upper respiratory infection
