This special issue of Preventing Chronic Disease invites contributions from individual states and communities with the coordination of the Directors of Health Promotion and Education. The focus of this issue is on state and local programs related to health education across the country.

Our cover art for this issue reflects the breadth of these programs through vibrant renditions of American life characteristic of American outsider art or “grassroots art.” Artists of this movement come from all over the country, usually have no formal art training, and appeal to the nation’s egalitarian ideals in their work. Outsider art typically makes use of maps, flags, and images of hometowns and neighbors, and the works are often characterized as fiercely patriotic and uplifting. The landscapes are bright and colorful, with an authenticity and sincerity that brings the joy of these communities to life.
