World Trade Center Health Program Seeking Peer Reviewers

The World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program is requesting nominations of scientific peer reviewers to provide independent peer review of proposed additions to the List of WTC-Related Health Conditions. Nominations must be submitted by February 1, 2019.

The WTC Heath Program will form a standing pool of individuals with the scientific, technical, and/or medical background needed to provide individual input to the Administrator of the WTC Health Program. Full details about the nomination process, including instructions for submitting requested materials, is provided in the Federal Register notice.

The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Reauthorization Act requires that the Administrator of the WTC Health Program has independent peer review of the scientific and technical evidence that is the basis for adding a health condition to the List of WTC-Related Health conditions. To ensure that this review is completed in a timely manner, the Administrator is establishing a standing pool of reviewers. Each reviewer will be included in the pool for three years, with the option of being nominated again at the end of their term. The reviewers will not meet as a group or provide consensus advice or recommendations. They will be asked to provide individual peer review on a given item, based on their background and expertise.

The WTC Health Program is administered by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and provides medical monitoring and treatment for responders at the WTC and related sites in New York City, Pentagon, and Shanksville, PA, and survivors who were in the New York City disaster area.

NIOSH is the federal institute that conducts research and makes recommendations for preventing work-related injuries and illnesses. More information about NIOSH can be found at www.cdc.gov/niosh.
