Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) Data

The following tables are produced from the 2013 and 2014 BRFSS Industry and Occupation Module data, a non-public* dataset. The analyses were conducted in SAS 9.3 using the SURVEYFREQ procedure and include only currently employed or self-employed adults, excluding armed forces. The tables, which are previously unpublished, present weighted, unadjusted, bivariate prevalence estimates for selected health behaviors, health outcomes and access to care, as described:

    • Current smoker (smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime and currently smoke)
    • Did not get the flu vaccine in the past year
    • No physical activity performed outside of regular job in the past 30 days
    • Binge drinker (5 or more drinks for men on one occasion or 4 or more drinks for women on one occasion, in the past 30 days)
    • Does not always wear seat belt
    • Inadequate sleep (< 7 hours in a 24 hour period)
  1. Health Outcomes:

    • Participant has ever been told by a doctor, nurse or other health professional that they have:
      • Cardiovascular disease (stroke, heart attack, or coronary heart disease/angina)
      • High blood pressure (the BRFSS question regarding blood pressure is asked every other year so the information is not available for 2014)
      • Asthma
      • Some form of arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus, or fibromyalgia
      • Diabetes
      • Depression
