The Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing sector comprises establishments primarily engaged in growing crops, raising animals, harvesting timber, and harvesting fish and other animals on a farm, ranch, or from their natural habitats.

Excluded from the Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing sector are establishments primarily engaged in agricultural research and administering programs for regulating and conserving land, minerals, wildlife, and forest use. These establishments are classified in Industry 54171, Research and Development in the Physical, Engineering, and Life Sciences; and Industry 92412, Administration of Conservation Programs, respectively. Lawn and Garden Services and Ornamental Shrub and Tree Services are no longer classified under Agricultural Services and are now classified under Industry 56173, “Landscaping Services”. Landscape Architectural Services are now classified in their own Industry, 54132, while Horticulture Consulting has been moved to Industry 54169 “Other Scientific and Technical Consulting Services.” All Veterinary Services have been removed from Agricultural Services to their own Industry, 54194. Also excluded are manufacturing activities that may be related to this sector e.g. seafood processing and lumber.
