Awards and Contest

NOIRS proudly announces the winners for each of the following:

The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE)/ASSE Foundation Student Travel Award recognizes an outstanding graduate student paper:

“The Role of the Safety Professional in Workplace Injury Prevention Research – Will You Be an Advocate?”

The author is Timothy D. Read, a doctoral candidate in the Occupational Injury Prevention Program at the University of Texas School of Public Health.

Mr. Read will receive an award of $600 and make a brief presentation during the Closing Plenary session on May 21 (10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.).

The Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety Student Travel Award recognizes two outstanding student papers:

"Types of Employee Resistance and Employee Injury in Commercial Robberies"

The author is Jennifer Jones, a doctoral candidate in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

"Improving Safety Climate through a Safety Recognition and Communication Program: A Mixed Methods Study"

The author is Emily Sparer, a doctoral candidate in the T. H. Chan School of Public Health at Harvard University.

Ms. Jones and Ms. Sparer will each receive awards of $400 and will present their papers at the symposium.

The National Safety Council Award for Stakeholder Collaboration in Occupational Injury Research:

“Immigrant Workers in Dairy – A Health and Safety Intervention Using the Community Health Worker Model in an Occupational Setting”

Authors are Amy Liebman, MPA, MA, and Patricia Juarez-Carrillo, PhD, MPH, of the Migrant Clinicians Network; Iris Reyes, MPH, Yurany Ninco Sanchez, and Matthew Keifer, MD, MPH, of the National Farm Medicine Center, Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation.

The research team received a $1,000 award and presented at the symposium.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Intervention Evaluation Contest recognizes a winner and two honorable mentions:

Winner: "The UK-CROPS Project – Cost-effective Roll-over Protective Structures"

Authors are Joan Mazur, PhD, Professor, College of Education; Stacy Vincent, PhD, Assistant Professor, College of Agriculture; Jennifer Watson, graduate student, College of Education; Susan Westneat, MA, Epidemiologist, College of Public Health; Morgan Schafbuch, graduate student, College of Agriculture; and Kyle S. Wood, graduate student, College of Agriculture; all of the University of Kentucky and Southeast Center for Agricultural Health and Injury Prevention.

Honorable mention: "Evaluation of NIOSH Workplace Violence Prevention for Nurses Online Course"

Authors are Maria Brann, PhD, MPH, Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies, School of Liberal Arts, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis; and Daniel Hartley, EdD, Epidemiologist in the Division of Safety Research, NIOSH.

Honorable mention: "A Universal Rig for Supporting Large Hammer Drills: Reduced Injury Risk and Improved Productivity"

Authors are David Rempel, MD, Director of the Ergonomics Graduate Training Program at the University of California, Berkeley; and Alan Barr, MS, Principal Development Engineer, Ergonomics Program, Center for Occupational and Environmental Health, University of California.

All three papers will be presented at the symposium.
