ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

N O T E S

This ICSC is based on NONOXYNOL-9. For the group of polyethylene mono(p-nonylphenyl)ether glycols (C9H19(C6H4)(OC2H4)nOH) the CAS number is 26027-38-3 and the RTECS number is RB1299090. The average number of ethylene oxide units (n) per molecule is indicated by the number following nonoxynol. This group of substances are nonionic surfactants and are used as detergents, emulsifiers, wetting agents, dispersants, stabilizers, intermediates in synthesis of anionic surfactants, and defoaming agents. Nonoxynols-9 and -11 are spermicides. Nonoxynols-4, -15 and -30 are used as pharmaceutical aids (surfactants). Compounds with n < 15 are a yellow to almost colorless liquid; n > 20 are pale-yellow to off-white pastes or waxes. Compounds with n < 6 are soluble in oil; compounds with higher n are soluble in water. Health effects of exposure to the substance have not been investigated adequately.
