TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE

ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS

PREVENTION

FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING

FIRE

In case of fire in the surroundings: dry powder, carbon dioxide, water spray, foam.
EXPLOSION

In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.
EXPOSURE
AVOID ALL CONTACT!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
•INHALATION Sore throat. Cough. Headache. Nausea. Vomiting. Laboured breathing. Shortness of breath. Chest tightness. Unconsciousness. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes).
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Refer for medical attention.
•SKIN Redness.
Protective gloves.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer for medical attention.
•EYES Causes watering of the eyes. Redness.
Safety spectacles, face shield, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION Abdominal pain. Headache. Nausea. Vomiting.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Refer for medical attention.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS CRYSTALS , TECHNICAL PRODUCT: DARK- BROWN LIQUID .

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating producing toxic fumes , including arsenic fumes and chlorine . Reacts with strong oxidants .

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV not established.
MAK not established.

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air will not or will only very slowly be reached on evaporation of this substance at 20°C; on spraying or dispersing, however, much faster.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance is irritating to the eyes and the skin . The substance may cause effects on the nervous system . Exposure at high levels could cause lowering of consciousness. Inhalation of high levels of its aerosol may cause lung oedema (see Notes). The effects may be delayed. Exposure at high levels may result in death.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:

PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES

Boiling point (decomposes): 333°C
Melting point: 38-44 °C
Relative density (water = 1): 1.4 at 45°C
Solubility in water, g/100 ml: 0.2
(poor)
Vapour pressure, Pa at 20°C: 0.06
Relative vapour density (air = 1): 9.15

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

The substance is very toxic to aquatic organisms.

N O T E S

The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation is therefore essential. Card has been partly updated in April 2005. See sections Occupational Exposure Limits, EU classification.
Transport Emergency Card: TEC (R)-61GT3-I-S if solid;
Transport Emergency Card: TEC (R)-61GT3-I-L if liquid.
