TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE

ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS

PREVENTION

FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING

FIRE Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames.
Powder, water spray, foam, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION

EXPOSURE
STRICT HYGIENE!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
•INHALATION See Ingestion.
Ventilation (not if powder), local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
•SKIN
Protective gloves.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer for medical attention.
•EYES Redness.
Safety goggles.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION Headache. Nausea. Vomiting. Twiching. Excitement. Restlessness. Convulsions. Laboured breathing.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Rinse mouth. Give a slurry of activated charcoal in water to drink. Refer for medical attention. Keep victim completely undisturbed.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS CRYSTALS OR WHITE CRYSTALLINE POWDER

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating producing toxic fumes including nitrogen oxides . The solution in water is a weak base. Reacts with strong oxidants , causing fire and explosion hazard.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV not established.

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
Evaporation at 20°C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly when dispersed, especially if powdered.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
May cause mechanical irritation. The substance may cause effects on the nervous system and eyes , resulting in convulsions and respiratory paralysis. Exposure may result in death.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:

PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES

Boiling point: 470°C
Melting point: 178°C
Solubility in water: poor
Octanol/water partition coefficient as log Pow: 0.98

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

The substance is harmful to aquatic organisms. This substance may be hazardous in the environment; special attention should be given to birds.

N O T E S

Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available. The recommendations on this Card also apply to Brucine hydrate (CAS 5892-11-5).
