TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE

ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS

PREVENTION

FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING

FIRE Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames.
NO water. Dry powder. Carbon dioxide. Alcohol-resistant foam.
EXPLOSION Above 69°C explosive vapour/air mixtures may be formed.
Above 69°C use a closed system, ventilation.

EXPOSURE
STRICT HYGIENE!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
•INHALATION Sore throat. Burning sensation. Cough. Laboured breathing. Shortness of breath. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes).
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
•SKIN Redness. Pain. Skin burns.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer for medical attention.
•EYES Redness. Pain. Severe deep burns.
Face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION Abdominal pain. Burning sensation. Shock or collapse.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Give plenty of water to drink. Refer for medical attention.

PACKAGING & LABELLING

Evacuate danger area! Consult an expert! Personal protection: chemical protection suit including self-contained breathing apparatus. Collect leaking liquid in sealable dry plastic containers. Absorb remaining liquid in dry sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment.
Dry. Well closed. Separated from acids, alcohols , amines , bases , oxidants , food and feedstuffs . Store in an area without drain or sewer access.
Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.
Marine pollutant.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS LIQUID , WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating or on contact with water or moisture producing toxic and corrosive fumes including hydrogen chloride and phenol. Reacts violently with acids , alcohols , amines , bases , oxidants and metals .

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV not established.
MAK not established.
Refer to TLV and MAK value of Phenol and Hydrogen chloride.

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour, through the skin and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air will be reached quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Corrosive on ingestion. Inhalation of the vapour may cause lung oedema (see Notes). The effects may be delayed.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:

PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES

Boiling point: 188-189°C
Melting point: -28°C
Density: 1.2
g/cm3
Solubility in water:

Auto-ignition temperature: 540°C

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

The substance is harmful to aquatic organisms.

N O T E S

Reacts violently with fire extinguishing agents such as water. The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation is therefore essential. Immediate administration of an appropriate inhalation therapy by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered. See ICSC 0163 Hydrogen chloride and ICSC 0070 Phenol.
