TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE

ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS

PREVENTION

FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING

FIRE Combustible.
NO open flames.
Powder, alcohol-resistant foam, water spray, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION

EXPOSURE
PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! AVOID EXPOSURE OF ADOLESCENTS AND CHILDREN!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
•INHALATION Confusion. Cough. Headache. Tremor. Laboured breathing. Nausea. Sore throat. Unconsciousness.
Local exhaust or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Artificial respiration if indicated.
•SKIN Redness.
Protective gloves.
First rinse with plenty of water, then remove contaminated clothes and rinse again. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap.
•EYES Redness.
Safety goggles, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection if powder.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION Abdominal cramps. Convulsions. Diarrhoea. Vomiting. (Further see Inhalation).
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Rinse mouth. Give a slurry of activated charcoal in water to drink. Rest. Refer for medical attention.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS CRYSTALS

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on burning producing irritating fumes .

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: 5 mg/m3 as TWA; A4 (not classifiable as a human carcinogen); (ACGIH 2004).
MAK: IIb (not established but data is available); skin absorption (H); (DFG 2004).
OSHA PEL: TWA 5 mg/m3
NIOSH REL: TWA 5 mg/m3
NIOSH IDLH: 2500 mg/m3 See: 83794

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
Evaporation at 20°C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance irritates the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. The substance may cause effects on the central nervous system , resulting in convulsions and respiratory depression.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis. The substance may have effects on the kidneys and liver .

PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES

Decomposes below boiling point
Melting point: 165-166°C
Density: 1.27
g/cm3
Solubility in water:
none
Octanol/water partition coefficient as log Pow: 4.10

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

The substance is very toxic to aquatic organisms. Avoid release to the environment in circumstances different to normal use. The substance may cause long-term effects in the aquatic environment.

N O T E S

The substance is combustible but no flash point is available in literature. Carrier solvents used in commercial formulations may change physical and toxicological properties. Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested. Card has been partly updated in April 2005. See sections Emergency response, Occupational Exposure Limits.
