TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE

ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS

PREVENTION

FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING

FIRE Flammable. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames, NO sparks, and NO smoking. NO contact with oxidants.
Powder, alcohol-resistant foam, water in large amounts, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Above 33°C explosive vapour/air mixtures may be formed.
Above 33°C closed system, ventilation, and explosion-proof electrical equipment.
In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.
EXPOSURE
AVOID ALL CONTACT!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
•INHALATION Sore throat. Cough. Burning sensation. Shortness of breath. Laboured breathing.
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer immediately for medical attention.
•SKIN Pain. Redness. Skin burns.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower, Refer immediately for medical attention.
•EYES Pain. Redness. Burns . Loss of vision.
Safety goggles, face shield, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION Burning sensation. Sore throat. Abdominal pain. Nausea. Vomiting. Shock or collapse.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Give one or two glasses of water to drink. Refer immediately for medical attention.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL

STORAGE

PACKAGING & LABELLING

Remove all ignition sources. Personal protection: chemical protection suit including self-contained breathing apparatus. Collect leaking liquid in sealable containers. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment.
Fireproof. Separated from food and feedstuffs, strong oxidants, acids , acid anhydrides and acid chlorides . Well closed. Store in an area without drain or sewer access.
Unbreakable packaging; put breakable packaging into closed unbreakable container. Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
HYGROSCOPIC COLOURLESS LIQUID , WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on burning producing toxic fumes including nitrogen oxides. The substance is a strong base, it reacts violently with acid and is corrosive. Reacts with acid anhydrides , acid chlorides and strong oxidants .

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV not established.
MAK not established.

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
Serious local effects by all routes of exposure.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached rather quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Corrosive on ingestion. Inhalation may cause lung oedema (see Notes). Swallowing the liquid may cause aspiration into the lungs with the risk of chemical pneumonitis. Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

The substance is harmful to aquatic organisms.

N O T E S

Immediate administration of an appropriate inhalation therapy by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered. The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation is therefore essential. Other melting points: -37 °C (technical product).
