TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE

ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS

PREVENTION

FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING

FIRE Not combustible. Liquid formulations containing organic solvents may be flammable. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.

In case of fire in the surroundings: use appropriate extinguishing media.
EXPLOSION

EXPOSURE
STRICT HYGIENE! AVOID EXPOSURE OF ADOLESCENTS AND CHILDREN!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
•INHALATION Pupillary constriction, muscle cramp, excessive salivation. Sweating. Nausea. Vomiting. Dizziness. Convulsions. Unconsciousness.
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
•SKIN MAY BE ABSORBED! Redness. Pain. (Further see Inhalation).
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer for medical attention.
•EYES Redness. Pain. Blurred vision.
Face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION Abdominal cramps. Vomiting. Diarrhoea. (See inhalation).
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Rinse mouth. Rest. Refer for medical attention.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL

STORAGE

PACKAGING & LABELLING

Personal protection: chemical protection suit including self-contained breathing apparatus. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Sweep spilled substance into sealable containers. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place. If liquid, collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place.
Separated from strong oxidants, strong acids, food and feedstuffs . Dry. Well closed. Store in an area without drain or sewer access.
Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.
Marine pollutant.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS TO YELLOW LIQUID OR WHITE CRYSTALS , WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating, on contact with acids , oxidants producing toxic and corrosive fumes including hydrogen bromide , hydrogen iodide , phosphorous oxides . The substance decomposes on contact with water producing dichlorvos and dichloroacetaldehyde. Attacks metal, plastic, rubber and coatings.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV:
(Inhalable fraction)
0.1 mg/m3 as TWA; (skin); A4 (not classifiable as a human carcinogen); SEN; BEI issued; (ACGIH 2005).
MAK: (Inhalable fraction) 1 mg/m3
Peak limitation category: II(2)
skin absorption (H); sensitization of skin (Sh);
Pregnancy risk group: C
(DFG 2008).
OSHA PEL: TWA 3 mg/m3
NIOSH REL: TWA 3 mg/m3 skin
NIOSH IDLH: 200 mg/m3 See: 300765

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol, through the skin and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air will not or will only very slowly be reached on evaporation of this substance at 20°C; on spraying or dispersing, however, much faster.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance is irritating to the eyes , the skin and the respiratory tract . The substance may cause effects on the nervous system , resulting in convulsions, respiratory depression. Cholinesterase inhibitor. Exposure far above the OEL may result in death. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Cholinesterase inhibitor; cumulative effect is possible: see acute hazards/symptoms.

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

The substance is very toxic to aquatic organisms. This substance may be hazardous in the environment; special attention should be given to honey bees. This substance does enter the environment under normal use. Great care, however, should be given to avoid any additional release, e.g. through inappropriate disposal.

N O T E S

Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested. Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available. Carrier solvents used in commercial formulations may change physical and toxicological properties. See ICSC 0690 Dichlorvos (decomposition product of Naled).
Transport Emergency Card: TEC (R)-61GT6-III
Card has been partially updated in November 2008: see Occupational Exposure Limits.
