TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE

ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS

PREVENTION

FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING

FIRE Combustible. Heating will cause rise in pressure with risk of bursting.
NO open flames.
Powder , foam , carbon dioxide
EXPLOSION Above 76°C explosive vapour/air mixtures may be formed.
Above 76°C use a closed system, ventilation.
In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.
EXPOSURE
PREVENT GENERATION OF MISTS!

•INHALATION Cough. Sore throat.
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest.
•SKIN Redness.
Protective gloves.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower.
•EYES Redness. Pain.
Safety spectacles.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Rest.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL

STORAGE

PACKAGING & LABELLING

Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. (Extra personal protection: filter respirator for organic gases and vapours).
Separated from oxidants. Cool. Store only if stabilized.

ICSC: 0885 Prepared in the context of cooperation between the International Programme on Chemical Safety & the Commission of the European Communities (C) IPCS CEC 1994. No modifications to the International version have been made except to add the OSHA PELs, NIOSH RELs and NIOSH IDLH values.

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour.

INHALATION RISK:
No indication can be given about the rate in which a harmful concentration in the air is reached on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance irritates the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract.

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

N O T E S

The commercial form of vinylbenzene contains the three isomeric forms but the meta isomer predominates. Insufficient data are available on the effect of this substance on human health, therefore utmost care must be taken. An added stabilizer or inhibitor can influence the toxicological properties of this substance, consult an expert. DVB-22, DVB-55 are trade names. Also consult ICSC # 0073 on Styrene.
NFPA Code: H2; F2; R2;
Card has been partially updated in November 2008: see Occupational Exposure Limits, Fire fighting.
