TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE

ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS

PREVENTION

FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING

FIRE Combustible.
NO open flames. NO contact with strong oxidants.
Foam, water spray, powder.
EXPLOSION Finely dispersed particles form explosive mixtures in air.
Prevent deposition of dust; closed system, dust explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting.

EXPOSURE
PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! AVOID EXPOSURE OF (PREGNANT) WOMEN!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
•INHALATION (See Ingestion).
Local exhaust or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
•SKIN MAY BE ABSORBED!
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer for medical attention.
•EYES
Face shield, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION Bleeding, pinpoint purplish-red spots, (see Notes).
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Rinse mouth. Induce vomiting (ONLY IN CONSCIOUS PERSONS!). Give plenty of water to drink. Refer for medical attention.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL

STORAGE

PACKAGING & LABELLING

Sweep spilled substance into sealable containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Chemical protection suit including self-contained breathing apparatus.
Provision to contain effluent from fire extinguishing. Separated from strong oxidants, food and feedstuffs . Well closed.
Unbreakable packaging; put breakable packaging into closed unbreakable container. Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.
Marine pollutant.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
ODOURLESS , TASTELESS, COLOURLESS TO WHITE CRYSTALLINE POWDER

PHYSICAL DANGERS:
Dust explosion possible if in powder or granular form, mixed with air.

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
Reacts violently with strong oxidants causing fire and explosion hazard.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: 0.1 mg/m3 (as TWA) (ACGIH 1997).
MAK: (Inhalable fraction) 0.5 mg/m3
Peak limitation category: II(2)
(DFG 2007).
OSHA PEL: TWA 0.1 mg/m3
NIOSH REL: TWA 0.1 mg/m3
NIOSH IDLH: 100 mg/m3 See: 81812

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol, through the skin, and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
Evaporation at 20°C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly on spraying.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance may cause effects on the blood , resulting in haemorrhage. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Does cause serious reproductive toxicity in humans.

PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES

Decomposes below boiling point
Melting point: 161°C
Solubility in water: none
Vapour pressure, Pa at 106°C: 133
Relative vapour density (air = 1): 10.6
Relative density of the vapour/air-mixture at 20°C (air = 1): 1.00
Octanol/water partition coefficient as log Pow: 2.52

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

The substance is harmful to aquatic organisms. This substance may be hazardous to the environment; special attention should be given to mammals. Avoid release to the environment in circumstances different to normal use.

N O T E S

Warfarin is usually available commercially as the water soluble sodium salt. The physical properties above refer to the parent substance. The substance is combustible but no flash point is available in literature. The symptoms of bleeding do not become manifest until several days later. Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available. Do NOT take working clothes home. Athrombine-K, Brumolin, Compound 42, Coumadin, d-CON, Kumadu, Mar-frin, Maveran, Ratoxin, Temus W, Warf Compound 42, and Warficide are trade names.
