FIRE FIGHTING

FIRE Not combustible but enhances combustion of other substances. Many reactions may cause fire or explosion. Heating will cause rise in pressure with risk of bursting.

In case of fire in the surroundings: in large fires: water spray; in small fires: powder.
EXPLOSION Risk of fire and explosion. Mixture with water or water vapour explodes violently on spark ignition.

In case of fire: cool cylinder by spraying with water but avoid contact of the substance with water. Combat fire from a sheltered position.
EXPOSURE
AVOID ALL CONTACT!

•INHALATION Cough. Headache. Laboured breathing. Sore throat.
Closed system and ventilation.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer immediately for medical attention.
•SKIN
See Notes.
Remove contaminated clothes.
•EYES Causes watering of the eyes.
Safety goggles or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water (remove contact lenses if easily possible). Refer for medical attention.
•INGESTION
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS COMPRESSED GAS , WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:
The gas is heavier than air.

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance is a strong oxidant and reacts violently with combustible and reducing materials. Reacts with many materials e.g. non-metals such as red phosphorous, boron powder, and porous materials such as silica, alumina and charcoal. Explodes on contact with steam.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: 0.05 ppm (Ceiling value); (ACGIH 2006).

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body in hazardous amounts by inhalation.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful concentration of this gas in the air will be reached very quickly on loss of containment.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
Lachrymation. The substance is irritating to the respiratory tract . Inhalation of this gas may cause lung oedema (see Notes). Exposure slightly above the OEL may result in death.

N O T E S

Do NOT take working clothes home. The occupational exposure limit value should not be exceeded during any part of the working exposure. The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation is therefore essential. Immediate administration of an appropriate inhalation therapy by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered.
