TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE

ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS

PREVENTION

FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING

FIRE Highly flammable or combustible depending on physical form.
NO open flames, NO sparks, and NO smoking.
Powder, water spray, foam, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Finely dispersed particles form explosive mixtures in air.
Prevent deposition of dust; closed system, dust explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting. Prevent build-up of electrostatic charges (e.g., by grounding).
In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.
EXPOSURE

•INHALATION

•SKIN

•EYES
Safety goggles.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL

STORAGE

PACKAGING & LABELLING

Sweep spilled substance into covered containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Remove to safe place. (Extra personal protection: P1 filter respirator for inert particles).
Fireproof. Separated from strong oxidants.
Airtight.
UN Hazard Class: 4.2
ICSC: 0702 Prepared in the context of cooperation between the International Programme on Chemical Safety & the Commission of the European Communities (C) IPCS CEC 1994. No modifications to the International version have been made except to add the OSHA PELs, NIOSH RELs and NIOSH IDLH values.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
BLACK POWDER OR SOLID IN VARIOUS FORMS.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:
Dust explosion possible if in powder or granular form, mixed with air. If dry, it can be charged electrostatically by swirling, pneumatic transport, pouring, etc.

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance may spontaneously ignite on contact with air. On combustion, forms toxic carbon monoxide if ventilation is insufficient. The substance is a strong reducing agent and reacts violently with oxidants such as bromates, chlorates and nitrates.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV not established.
MAK not established.
OSHA PEL: TWA 15 mg/m3 (total) TWA 5 mg/m3 (resp)
NIOSH REL: See Appendix D
NIOSH IDLH: N.D. See: IDLH INDEX

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:

INHALATION RISK:
Evaporation at 20°C is negligible; a nuisance-causing concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:

PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES

Boiling point: >4000°C
Melting point: >3500°C
Relative density (water = 1): 1.8-3.51
Solubility in water:
none

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

N O T E S

Health effects of exposure to the substance have been investigated, but none has been found. This card applies to pure carbon in a non-fibrous form. Carbon fibres or carbon containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons may pose different hazards. Also consult ICSC # 0471 carbon black and ICSC # 0893 graphite (natural).
