TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE

ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS

PREVENTION

FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING

FIRE Not combustible. Liquid formulations containing organic solvents may be flammable. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.

In case of fire in the surroundings: all extinguishing agents allowed.
EXPLOSION

EXPOSURE
PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! AVOID EXPOSURE OF ADOLESCENTS AND CHILDREN!

•INHALATION Blue lips or finger nails. Blue skin. Headache. Dizziness.
Avoid inhalation of fine dust and mist. Local exhaust or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
•SKIN Rash.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap.
•EYES
Safety goggles.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION Burning sensation. Confusion. Drowsiness. Nausea. Vomiting. (Further see Inhalation).
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Rinse mouth. Induce vomiting (ONLY IN CONSCIOUS PERSONS!). Refer for medical attention.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL

STORAGE

PACKAGING & LABELLING

Do NOT wash away into sewer. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Sweep spilled substance into sealable containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place. Personal protection: A/P2 filter respirator for organic vapour and harmful dust.
Provision to contain effluent from fire extinguishing. Separated from food and feedstuffs .
Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS CRYSTALS.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating or on burning producing toxic and corrosive fumesincludinghydrogen chlorideandnitrogen oxides.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV not established.

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
Evaporation at 20°C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly when dispersed.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance may cause effects on the central nervous systemand blood , resulting in formation of methaemoglobin (see Notes). The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:

PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES

Melting point: 92-93°C
Relative density (water = 1): 1.2
Solubility in water:
none
Vapour pressure, Pa at 60°C: 0.012
Octanol/water partition coefficient as log Pow: 3.12

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

The substance is toxic to aquatic organisms. Avoid release to the environment in circumstances different to normal use.

N O T E S

Technical grade propanil is a brown crystalline solid. Some impurities cause chloracne. Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available. If the substance is formulated with solvent(s) also consult the card(s) (ICSC) of the solvent(s). Carrier solvents used in commercial formulations may change physical and toxicological properties. Chem-rice, Herbax, Propanex, Prop-Job, Riselect, Stam, Stampede, Strel, Supernox, Surcopur, Surpur are trade names. Card has been partly updated in October 2004. See sections Occupational Exposure Limits, EU classification, Emergency Response.
